Frequently Asked Questions: FAQ’s

How do I know this is a secure web site?

To ensure your credit card’s safety we use an independent company to securely process your order.

How long will it take to receive my order?

If you ordered live beneficial insects, our first concern is that you receive a healthy and effective product. We don’t want your order to be stuck in the delivery system over the weekend, so we ship orders with live bugs that are received through Friday on the following Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

Orders that do not include live bugs are shipped within 48 hours.

We will send you an email when your order is shipped.

Can we ship overnight? Two day? Special Delivery?

We normally ship by First Class Mail with the USPS or by FedEx with second day delivery. However, we can do special shipping for a slightly higher cost. Some items are not always readily available and may take a little longer to ship. When this happens we will notify you by email.

How do I release the live beneficial insects?

Each of the insects has different instructions for release. You will receive directions and recommendations with your order, or you may find the insect on this website and click on “click for directions” to view them now.

How do I know what bug to use?

Check out the “Pests & Problems” section of “Useful Information”. Find your pest insect and see what we recommend. Then go to that insect in “Beneficial Insects” to find out more about it.

Will the temperature affect my beneficial insects?

Each insect reacts to the temperature and changes in temperature differently, so it is very important to check the directions for information about the insect you are using. In general, most beneficial insects like to be kept cool prior to release.

Will the Ladybugs stay in my yard?

Just like us, ladybugs are always looking for good food. For them, the best food is aphids, so if you have lots of aphids in your yard, they will be happy to stay in your yard and “pig out”. The more aphids they eat, the more eggs they will lay, so when they do fly away, their eggs will soon hatch and the larvae will continue the search for aphids to eat. For more information see “Ladybugs” in the “Beneficial Insects” section

Are the Earth worms Red Wrigglers?

Yes they are, technically know as “Lumbricus rubellus”. See “Earth worms” in the “Soil Amendments” section for more information.

How many Earth worms are in the container?

The container that Orcon sells in the store has at least 200 worms in it. They are packed in peat moss to maximize shelf life. On the website worms are sold by the pound with about 1800 to 2000 to the pound. We sell what is know as “bed run” sizes which means there will be a variety in the size and age of the worms in the package.

How many Praying Mantids will I end up with?

There are about 200 eggs in each Praying Mantid egg case, and usually about half of those hatch. Depending on how much of a food source is available approximately 5-50 Praying Mantids will live through the season.

How do I know when my Praying Mantids have hatched?

Go to “Beneficial Insects” and scroll down to Praying Mantids, then “Click for Directions.

Do you sell fully grown Praying Mantids?

We only sell Praying Mantids in the egg case, and we normally have them in stock from December through June.

How low of a temperature can nematodes survive in the winter? How cold does the ground get in comparison to the outside air?

Nematodes work as long as the soil is not frozen and the soil is moist. Don’t worry; soil takes a long time to react to air temperatures. If most of your plants survive the winters it is a good indication that the soil does not freeze. Even if a plant is damaged from frost above the roots are often fine as the ground is warmer. Your Beneficial Nematodes are snug and warm and going to work in your soil.

Why was my credit card declined?

We use an independent company to provide secure credit card transactions and so we do not have access to this information. The best thing to do is check with the bank that issued the card.
